MahJongg! Galveston Summer Tournament Brings Strategy, Smiles, and Support for a Cause

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Café in the Park at Moody Gardens came alive with the click of tiles, bursts of laughter, and the hum of friendly competition during the second Mah Jongg! Galveston Tournament. Forty-four players gathered for five spirited rounds of American Mah Jongg, blending sharp strategy with local charm — and a whole lot of fun.

Returning with determination after May’s tournament, Nicole Barbosa of The Woodlands dominated the day, scoring an impressive 380 points, winning two rounds, and claiming first place along with a $400 cash prize. Fredell Belasco of Houston followed closely with 335 points to secure second place and $300, while Jan Aramburu earned third place with 235 points and took home $200. Dee Fox of The Woodlands placed fourth with 230 points, and fifth place ended in a tie between Penny Sewany of Seabrook and vendor Barbie Talisman of Sugar Land, each earning 225 points.

Additional cash prizes were awarded to Jane Cook, Nicole Barbosa, Cathy Hale, Dee Maxwell, Kristi Carpenter, and Courtney Cook for winning either a round or a special hand.

Beyond the scores, the tournament served a greater purpose. Players and guests raised $435 for Kerr County Flood Relief, which Texas First Bank Representative Brande Baumgarten pledged to match through the Texas First Relief Fund.

Between matches, attendees browsed Barbie Talisman’s pop-up shop of Mah Jongg-themed gear and accessories — a crowd favorite for upgrading game bags or finding the perfect gift.

The event was coordinated by Veronica Hugger and Tammie Taylor, both thrilled by the turnout and the community’s enthusiasm.

“We are so happy we were able to offer a tournament before summer ended,” Hugger said. “And we can’t wait for our three-day tournament in October!”

The Mah Jongg! Galveston Fall Tournament is set for October 21–23, 2025, at the Moody Gardens Convention Center — promising more rounds, more prizes, and even more Mah Jongg magic.
